S70C | 1070 | 70# Steel Plate
1070 steel is a high-carbon steel with around 0.70% carbon content, offering excellent hardness and wear resistance after heat treatment.
It is commonly used for springs, cutting tools, knives, and other applications requiring high strength and edge retention.
What is 1070 steel?
1070 steel is a high-carbon steel with a carbon content of approximately 0.65–0.75%, providing excellent hardness, strength, and wear resistance after proper heat treatment. Its tensile strength generally reaches ≥700 MPa, yield strength is about ≥480 MPa, elongation around 10–15%, and Brinell hardness in the normalized condition is typically 200–250 HB. After quenching and tempering, the hardness can exceed 55 HRC, making it suitable for applications requiring high edge retention.
Additionally, 1070 steel has low weldability and machinability due to its high carbon content but offers outstanding performance in applications that demand durability and cutting ability. It is widely used in the manufacturing of springs, knives, blades, agricultural tools, and wear-resistant machine parts. Due to its balance of hardness and toughness, 1070 steel remains a popular choice in both industrial tooling and edged weapon production.
Overview
The surface treatment of the steel plate can be either cold-rolled or hot-rolled.
1070 steel, a high-carbon steel, belongs to the category of plain carbon steels.
After proper heat treatment, it achieves excellent hardness, high tensile strength, and superior wear resistance compared to medium-carbon steels.
ZGT Steel supports various hardness customizations and OEM processing services to meet diverse requirements.Healthy inventories of 1070 steel plate are maintained in all ZGT® Steel distribution centers.
The material can be forged, riveted, bolted, or welded, and shows reliable performance in demanding mechanical applications.
Available Sizes in 1070 Steel Plate
Given its broad applications in toolmaking, machinery, and automotive industries, ZGT Steel keeps a ready stock of the following standard sizes in our distribution centers.

Benefits of 1070 Steel Plate
In the hot-rolled or normalized condition, 1070 steel offers excellent hardness and wear resistance after proper heat treatment.
With its high carbon content, it provides superior strength and edge retention compared to medium-carbon steels, making it highly reliable for demanding applications.
Although it has lower machinability than low- or medium-carbon steels, it can still be processed through forging, pressing, or precision machining.
These properties make 1070 steel an ideal material for manufacturing springs, cutting tools, blades, and high-strength wires.
Applications & Industries
1070 steel is widely used for components requiring high hardness, strength, and wear resistance, such as springs, cutting tools, saw blades, and knives. It is also applied in the production of high-strength wires, automotive parts, and agricultural machinery components. In the toolmaking industry, 1070 steel is commonly used for chisels, hand tools, and edged tools that demand excellent edge retention. Within the mechanical sector, it is employed for shafts, fasteners, and wear-resistant parts exposed to heavy stress and friction.
Additionally, 1070 steel finds application in the automotive, machinery, and tool manufacturing industries, where its combination of durability and performance makes it a reliable material choice.
