1.2003 | 75Cr1 Steel Plate

75Cr1 is a high-carbon, chromium-bearing steel under the old German DIN standard. It contains about 0.75% carbon and 0.40% chromium. After proper heat treatment, it can reach a hardness of around 58–62 HRC, providing good wear resistance and edge retention. The chromium addition improves hardenability and strength compared with plain carbon steels. 75Cr1 is commonly used for knives, springs, and cutting tools.

What is 75Cr1 steel?

75Cr1 steel is a high-carbon, chromium-bearing steel defined by the old German DIN standard, and it is not included in the Chinese GB system. It typically contains about 0.70–0.80% carbon, ~0.40% chromium, and ~0.25–0.50% manganese, with very low phosphorus and sulfur contents (≤0.030%), ensuring good purity and consistent mechanical properties. The small chromium addition enhances hardenability and wear resistance compared with plain carbon steels such as C75.

In the annealed condition, 75Cr1 generally exhibits a hardness of 160–200 HB, allowing moderate machinability and cold workability. After quenching and tempering, it can reach 58–62 HRC, offering excellent wear resistance, high strength, and stable edge retention. Its tensile strength typically exceeds 900 MPa, with yield strength above 600 MPa and elongation around 8–10%, reflecting a balance between hardness and limited ductility.

Machinability is fair in the soft-annealed state but becomes poor once hardened. Due to its relatively high carbon content, weldability is low and generally not recommended because of cracking risks. Careful tempering after quenching is essential to reduce brittleness and achieve optimal performance.

Thanks to its combination of hardness, strength, and wear resistance, 75Cr1 is widely used for knives, saw blades, springs, cutting tools, and high-strength wear components. It is particularly popular in knife-making and precision tooling, where edge retention, dimensional stability, and surface finish are critical.

Overview

The surface condition of 75Cr1 steel plate can be supplied in hot-rolled, annealed, or cold-rolled form, depending on the final application and required mechanical properties.

75Cr1 steel is a high-carbon, chromium-bearing tool steel defined under the old German DIN standard. With a carbon content of approximately 0.70–0.80% and chromium around 0.40%, it provides higher hardenability and wear resistance compared with plain carbon steels such as C75 or 1075.

After quenching and tempering, 75Cr1 delivers excellent tensile strength, edge retention, and hardness up to 58–62 HRC, making it ideal for knives, springs, saw blades, and cutting tools. However, its toughness is limited and weldability is poor due to the high carbon content, so controlled heat treatment and proper tempering are essential to balance strength and ductility.

ZGT Steel supports customized hardness ranges and OEM processing services to meet various industrial requirements. Stable inventories of 75Cr1 steel plate are maintained across all ZGT® Steel distribution centers.

The material can be forged, cold-worked, or machined in the annealed state with appropriate precautions. It offers reliable performance in precision tools, blades, and mechanical components where hardness, edge retention, and dimensional stability are critical.

Benefits of 75Cr1 Steel Plate

In the annealed or cold-rolled condition, 75Cr1 steel offers good machinability and formability, making it convenient to process before hardening. With its high carbon content and chromium addition, it achieves excellent hardness, edge retention, and wear resistance after quenching and tempering, ensuring strong performance in demanding cutting and spring applications.

Although its toughness and weldability are lower than those of medium-carbon steels, 75Cr1 maintains reliable fatigue strength and long-term durability when properly heat-treated. These characteristics make 75Cr1 steel a preferred material for knives, saw blades, springs, hand tools, and precision mechanical components that require high hardness, wear resistance, and dimensional stability.

Applications & Industries

75Cr1 steel is primarily used in applications requiring high hardness, wear resistance, and dimensional stability. It is a preferred material for manufacturing precision cutting tools, measuring instruments, molds, and wear-resistant components, where edge retention and surface durability are critical.

Thanks to its high carbon content and chromium addition, 75Cr1 offers excellent hardenability and abrasion resistance after proper heat treatment, making it ideal for punches, dies, and precision tooling parts that operate under continuous stress or friction.

In the machinery and tooling industries, 75Cr1 is valued for its stable mechanical performance and fine surface finish, ensuring long service life in industrial blades, fine molds, and precision mechanical components that demand accuracy and durability.
